STAR TREK: PROTECTOR
SEASON 1, EPISODE 1: Warlord

Space, full of mystery and wonder. These are the voyages of the starship Protector. Her ongoing mission: explore new worlds, discover new lifeforms, serve and protect the Federation.

Captain’s Log: Stardate 2260.310. USS Protector has been given a priority assignment by Starfleet Command. Having just embarked her first crew, and completed a brief shakedown cruise, Admiral Komack believes that she’s ready to get down to work. As the newest ship in the fleet, and one of the most powerful, this mission should be well within her capabilities. The crew, a mix of talented, knowledgeableveterans and well trained juniors is up to the task. Still, as Protector’s first captain, I can’t help but be slightly apprehensive about taking an untried ship into danger.”

The briefing room was full of the senior officers of the Protector. Gold, blue, and red shirted senior personnel ranged on both sides of the table, with the captain at one end, and the first officer at the other. Stars slid past the viewports at warp speed as Captain Nelson Farragut gave the mission briefing.

Protector has been assigned a priority one mission by Starfleet Command. She’s the newest ship, with the freshest crew, and is, most importantly, the closest Constitution-class vessel to the area of interest. There’s been an increase in Klingon military activity near the border, and some reports of sightings of possible Klingon scout ships in Federation space, specifically in the Mutara sector. Intelligence reports indicate that a rogue Klingon warrior has declared himself “Warlord of the Empire” and is hunting for some sort of lost superweapon. These reports are unconfirmed, of course, but the Klingons are hunting for SOMETHING out there. Our mission is to show the flag out there in Mutara, let the few locals in the area know that Starfleet is concerned about them. We also have to monitor these alleged Klingon incursions. A secondary objective is to develop further information on the Klingon activity on their side of the border. I don’t need to remind you that the Klingons still haven’t calmed down over the Harrison incident. Federation ships in their space, and Starfleet personnel on their homeworld didn’t go well with them. I can’t say I blame them. Remember, we are diplomats and explorers, not soldiers. Our rules of engagement are VERY constrained. We don’t antagonize the Klingons, we don’t escalate tensions with the Klingons, and we sure as hell don’t fire at Klingons! We are only to use force as a last resort, in defense of Federation citizens.”

SOME TIME LATER…

The bridge of the Protector, like all Constitution-class ships, was brightly lit and well laid out. Captain Farragut sat in the center seat, watching the viewscreen intently. The large window showed the stars passing by at warp, with a data overlay showing location information and the ship’s status.

Coming out of warp at the border now,
Captain,” said the young helmsman.

Thank you, Mr. Cross. Bring us to a full stop.”

Protector slowed below the speed of light, and quickly came to a stop, hanging in space. Visible in the distance were the lovely blues and purples of the Mutara Nebula, namesake of the entire sector.

Gareb, scan the area. Check for any indication of Klingon activity.”

The Aenar first officer quickly got to work with the sensors.

Captain, there is a Klingon ship just over the border, barely within our sensor range. At this range we can’t identify it, but by mass I believe it to be a battlecruiser, possible D-7 class. It seems to have detected our sensor scan, and is approaching the border on an intercept course.”

The captain gave his chair a complete turn, looking at his senior officers.

Suggestions?”
